Sotheby’s makes a killing then sacks cleaners demanding living wage

Trade Onion by Jon Bigger

Last night Sotheby’s in London made an absolute killing. The media is awash with articles about the amazing success of rich people being able to outbid each other for fantastic pieces of art.

But outside the auction there was a lively protest encouraging Sotheby’s and their contractors to pay cleaning staff and porters the London Living Wage.

This morning news came through that Sotheby’s does not want the staff involved in the protest on their premises again. They have effectively been sacked from their roles and there is no indication yet how the contractor will deal with this. In any case my understanding is that the workers want to remain with Sotheby’s.

Please support the workers in whatever way possible. You can follow them on facebook and via twitter.
